Pendas Fields and Barnbow Wood may have been the site of the Battle of Winwaed in 655 AD (thus the name "Pendas fields" named after the King of Mercia who died at the battle, Penda), It has its own sports centre and secondary school — John Smeaton Academy, named after 18th-century civil engineer John Smeaton.
